Water JPI Workshop on Strategy for International Cooperation

The Water JPI, as part of its supporting EU-funded Coordination Support Action IC4Water, is looking at opportunities to develop a common strategy for international cooperation with other European Initiatives. To progress this work, a workshop was held in Vienna on 19 September 2018. This workshop was targeted at other international initiatives (e.g. other JPIs as FACCE-JPI, Art. 185 initiatives PRIMA and BONUS, ERA-NET BiodivERsA and more), policy-makers and relevant stakeholders to discuss the current state of play of international cooperation, exchange views and share experiences to identify common barriers and practices and find possible solutions.

The programme started with introductions of a number of initiatives (JPI HDHL was presented by Jolien Wenink, and JPI MYBL by Denice Moi Thuk Shung) and the views of the Groupe de Programmation Conjointe (GPC) and the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD) on international cooperation. The chief Technical Adviser for UN-Water stressed the need of international cooperation in relation to the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development goals. The programme followed by a group discussion and break-out discussions. A survey undertaken in April 2018 by the Irish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on the current state of play of international cooperation among relevant EU initiatives informed the discussions of this first workshop.

The outcomes of the workshop and the findings of the survey mentioned above will inform a second workshop which will take place in 2019 and targets the research community engaging in the Joint Actions implemented by the initiatives involved in international cooperation.
