LEAP-Agri: collaborations on Food and Nutrition Security and Sustainable Agriculture selected
The Long term EU-Africa research and innovation Partnership on food and nutrition security and sustainable Agriculture” (LEAP-Agri)* launched a call for research and innovation (R&I) proposals on Food and Nutrition Security and Sustainable Agriculture (FNSSA) on 15 March 2017. 200 pre-proposals have been submitted to the call, of which 94 were eligible for the full proposal step. Based on an Independent Review Panel (IRP) evaluation and ranking of the proposals, and taking into account the possibilities of the 24 funding agencies, 27 projects have been selected for funding. A total budget of EUR 22,7 million has been dedicated to the funding of the projects (EUR 15.6 million committed by the funding partners, and EUR 7.1 million expected EU contribution).
The 27 projects involve 250 African and European teams from 20 countries, and cover a large range of topics related to Food systems. The projects relate to the following three R&I foci: "Sustainable Intensification", "Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition", and "Expansion and Improvement of Agricultural markets and trade". Each project involves at least two teams from African countries and two teams from European countries. In 14 projects one or more partners from the Netherlands are involved:

Projects started their activities on 1 September 2018, for a 36 months duration. Variability exists between projects and teams related to their start in relation to funding contracts preparation and signature.

*: LEAP-Agri is a partnership of 30 partners from European and African countries and the EU aimed at research and innovation for food and nutrition security as well as sustainable agriculture, including aquaculture. LEAP-Agri is an ERA-NET cofund project, a partnership financed by Ministries from these countries and cofunded by the European Commission supporting the implementation of the EU-Africa High Level Policy Dialogue on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI). The project has two pillars, (i) funding R&I projects on FNSSA, and (ii) feeding the long-term EU- AU partnership on FNSSA with a focus on identification of innovative instruments, on communication and dissemination of results emerging from LEAP-Agri activities. Contributing to the definition of a joint Strategic R&I Agenda in the FNSSA domain, and liaison with relevant public and private stakeholders in Europe and Africa are also key expectations from LEAP-Agri. The project has started on 1 December 2016 for a 5 years duration.
