Official launch of the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda of the Water JPI

The Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda of the Joint Programming Initiative "Water challenges for a changing world" (Water JPI) will be presented on 21st October 2014 at COVE Building in Brussels.

The WATER JPI SRIA provides a framework for future Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) activities and European investments in the water sector, which amount to over 500 M € per year laying out RDI needs grouped by thematic areas and priorities according to their scientific and societal importance. This guidance document is essential to develop the long term vision of this EU intergovernmental initiative and to implement the alignment of all RDI activities among member countries and was updated through a participatory approach, which has involved the members of the Water JPI Advisory Boards, many national experts, the strategic agenda of partnering initiatives, policy documents and foresight studies and the public through an on-line consultation completed by 630 people.

New RDI needs and objectives have been identified through a comprehensive literature review of many information sources, including national RDI agendas, the strategic agenda of partnering initiatives, policy documents and foresight studies. A stakeholders consultative workshop, organized in Lyon on the 3rd and the 4th April 2014, provided further information on scientific and technological outputs, trends, gaps and priorities in the water RDI domain. The WATER JPI SRIA is structured around these five core themes: Maintaining Ecosystem Sustainability; Developing Safe Water Systems for the Citizens; Promoting Competitiveness in the Water Industry; Implementing a Water-Wise Bio-Based Economy; Closing the Water Cycle Gap. Focusing on tools and measures to provide effective solutions to these most relevant water challenges this SRIA intends to contribute to boost the competitiveness and growth of the European water sector.
